Rwanda

If you want the incredibly moving experience of seeing endangered mountain gorillas in the wild, Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is an excellent base. Gorilla trekking is strictly managed to minimise negative effects on the gorillas from overtourism and to ensure their health. Permits limit visitors to 8 people spending 1 hour per day with each gorilla family group. With limited permits, it is advisable to book at least a year in advance. Another primate highlight in Rwanda is the golden monkey which can be seen on the lower slopes.
Akagera National Park on Rwanda's eastern side offers a great savannah safari destination to pair with the gorilla experience. Based around a large lake, you can see the classic African wildlife including the Big 5, giraffe, zebra and many bird species as well as enjoy the tranquility of the lake.
